Fantastic Old-Fashioned recipe, one of my go-to’s in my home personally. I often use demerara sugar cubes or rich demerara syrup in place of the sugar cube though. I find it adds a bit more depth, but either demerera or regular sugar will still taste great!
The Old-Fashioned isn’t just a drink; it’s a vibe. Smooth, bold, and timeless, this classic cocktail never goes out of style.
The Smokin’ Classic Old-Fashioned
Ingredients
2 oz (60 ml) Bourbon (your best bottle, don’t waste the cheap stuff)
1 sugar cube (or 1/2 oz / 15 ml simple syrup)
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Orange peel (for garnish)
Ice (a big ol’ cube if you’ve got it)
Wood chips and a cocktail smoking device (apple, cherry, or whatever makes you feel fancy)
Directions
- Prep the Glass: Place the sugar cube in your favorite rocks glass and douse it with the bitters.
If you’re using simple syrup, pour it in like you mean it. - Add the Booze: Splash in the bourbon and give it a gentle stir. You’re not churning butter
here, keep it smooth. - Ice It Up: Add a big cube of ice. Or a small one, if you’re feeling basic.
- Get Smokin: Fire up your smoker with your choice of wood chips. Place the glass under the
smoke and let it sit for 30 seconds to a minute. Bask in your own genius while it infuses. - Garnish Like a Pro: Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink, then drop it in. Take a
deep breaththis is the drink of legends.
Notes
- Want to impress your guests? Serve it in a smoked dome or light the orange peel on fire for some
bar flair. Just don’t burn the house down. - Feel free to sub in dehydrated orange slices instead of fresh peel.
- Feel free to sub in demerara sugar cubes or demerara syrup if you prefer (I do).

Cocktail Smoker I use. Check this thing out, USB rechargeable, no butane or open flame, and works really well! SmokPub is new to the market and I actually purchased my first one late last year via Kickstarter, but have now added a second one purchased directly from Amazon.
Need giant ice blocks so you don’t look like a newbie? Here is the one I use and love. Does it make perfectly crystal clear ice, not with my water. But they still look great and last forever in your drink!
Link to the simple to store dehydrated orange slices that I use frequently since I never seem to have an orange laying around.
